Commissioned by BMW Nordics
The BMW iX1 Cut-Body was commissioned by BMW Nordics as a technical training and exhibition vehicle, designed to reveal the engineering and innovation behind BMW's latest generation of electric vehicles.
Built as a fully functional display vehicle, it allows technicians, customers and visitors to explore the complex technology hidden beneath the vehicle's exterior in a clear, engaging and educational way.
The 50/50 Concept
Following the successful concept used in previous cut-body projects, the vehicle features a 50/50 split.
The driver's side remains completely original, presenting the BMW iX1 exactly as it leaves the factory. On the passenger side, the interior trim, body panels and selected structural components have been carefully removed or sectioned, exposing the vehicle's engineering without compromising its overall appearance.
This unique approach creates a striking visual contrast between the finished production vehicle and the sophisticated technology hidden beneath its surface.
Making Electric Technology Visible
One of the primary objectives of this project was to make the high-voltage systems of the vehicle fully visible and easy to understand.
The high-voltage battery, orange HV cabling, electric drive unit, power electronics and numerous electrical components have all been carefully sectioned and displayed. Every visible component has been positioned to clearly demonstrate how the various systems interact, transforming complex electric vehicle technology into an accessible learning experience.
Precision Engineering
Creating a cut-body vehicle is far more than simply cutting a car in half.
The complete vehicle is first entirely dismantled before every individual component is carefully sectioned, machined, refinished, painted and reassembled. Every exposed edge is meticulously finished and every component precisely aligned to achieve a factory-quality appearance.
The result is a vehicle that not only illustrates advanced engineering but also reflects the highest standards of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
A Strong Technical Partnership
Projects of this complexity require specialist expertise from multiple disciplines.
For the bodywork modifications and finishing, VikingWorkx collaborates with ByATTi, an innovative body repair and fabrication specialist based in Genk, Belgium. Together, both companies combine technical engineering, precision craftsmanship and automotive passion to create unique educational and exhibition vehicles that meet the demanding standards of premium automotive manufacturers.
From Belgium to Scandinavia
After completion, the BMW iX1 Cut-Body was delivered to BMW Belgium, where it was initially displayed in their showroom.
From there, the vehicle began its journey across Scandinavia, where it has been used by BMW Nordics as both a demonstration and technical training vehicle. It continues to support dealer networks, technicians and training centres by providing an exceptional visual insight into BMW's high-voltage electric vehicle technology.
Engineering Beyond the Surface
The BMW iX1 Cut-Body perfectly reflects VikingWorkx's philosophy: combining technical expertise, precision craftsmanship and innovative thinking to transform complex automotive engineering into a powerful educational experience.
Every cut, every exposed component and every perfectly aligned detail tells the story of the remarkable technology hidden beneath the surface of a modern electric vehicle.
